Tutoring
Every year SCA organises placements in local primary and secondary schools. In return for agreeing to volunteer 3hrs per week for a 10 week period, individuals receive training from CSV and will receive a certificate at the end of their placement, as well as vital work experience.
Training sessions are held twice a year, in October/November and in February/March. The training lasts approximately 2 - 3 hours, takes place in the Students' Union, and is normally held on a Wednesday afternoon.
Please contact scaction@soton.ac.uk if you are interested in getting involved. Please also note that any student wishing to participate in this scheme will be asked to complete an enhanced CRB check through us.
SCA-Funded Educational Workshops
SCA offer grants to clubs and societies or groups of individuals who have a particular skill or interest for organising one-off or multiple educational workshops in the community. Please click here for more information!
School Governor
The School Governors' One Stop Shop is a small independent charity which aims to recruit volunteers with transferable skills to become governors in schools across England.
You do not need to be a parent, know about education or have specific skills to be a good governor - you should be willing to work in a team, to challenge assumptions you may not agree with, to encourage and promote innovations, and to make a full contribution to the decision making process.
As long as you are over 18, you will be welcome. The average time commitment is just 2 - 4 evening meetings a term so it is a role that can be managed by full time students.
Reading Scheme
Do you want to help pupils at Key Stage 2 to enjoy their reading? Volunteers are needed form just one hour a week, to help with reading to, and listening to children read. This scheme can provide an alternative to the Student Tutoring Scheme for students with less available time each week, but who would still like to volunteer in local schools.
Please note that any volunteer wishing to get involved with this opportunity is required to complete a CRB check with us prior to starting in school. Contact SCA on scaction@soton.ac.uk to find out more and arrange a time to come in and complete your forms.
If you are looking for a more structured or longer term volunteering opportunity that involves Reading, then we advise you contact Volunteer Reading Help for more information about the work that their charity carries out.

The Day Nursery, located on the Highfield Campus, has been established for over 27 years and caters for children from 4 months to 5 years old.
